Mercury’s propeller selector program is a tool to assist you in finding the best propeller for your application. The results are based on our extensive test data base where recommendations are calculated based on the averages of the boats tested in each category. For the majority of boats, the calculation works fine. In certain circumstances, your boat might be out of our data base range and an error will occur. In this case, it is recommended you visit your local Mercury Dealer for definitive information on propping your boat.
Why is the selection of "Boat Type" important?
It is critical to choose the type of boat that corresponds most closely with your boat type. Test data has been consolidated based on these general boat types, helping calculate proper propeller selection.
Which set of selection criteria should I use?
For the most accurate results, Current Performance is recommended, followed by Boat Weight and finally Boat Length. Utilizing the Boat Length feature, the average weight of the boats in our testing data base is used. The program is less accurate when your boat weighs significantly more or less than the average in our data base.
Why is it important to choose the proper engine and drive?
Each engine has a specified RPM operating range and performance characteristics. By choosing the correct engine and drive, we are better able to provide propeller recommendations.
How does choosing a different performance goal change the recommended propeller?
The program does two things differently. First, it adjusts the RPM targets for the engine and propeller combination. For example, the program will recommend a propeller that runs at the top of the RPM range for "Acceleration" while targeting a propeller in the lower end of the RPM range for "Mid Range Cruising." Secondly, it recommends propellers based on their performance goals. In general, a 4-blade propeller has better acceleration and handling than 3-blade propellers.
Why does the program sometimes identify multiple propellers?
Each boat is slightly different and multiple lines could provide similar benefits. All propellers were identified to allow you to make a final decision based on either further research in the web site or recommendations from your dealer.
